Telemedicine Abortion Reinstated in Moldova for Exceptional Cases

09 June, 2026

At the Reproductive Health Training Center, we welcome the recent decision to reinstate telemedicine medical abortion in the Republic of Moldova, even if currently only in crisis and exceptional situations.

Last year, access to telemedicine abortion was suspended, despite strong evidence that it is safe and effective. This decision had a direct impact on many women, especially those living in rural areas or facing barriers to in person care.

Together with our partners, including ASTRA Network, we actively advocated for the restoration of this essential service. In February 2025, we joined a collective effort and co signed an open letter addressed to the Moldovan authorities. The letter, supported by more than 600 experts, activists and organizations worldwide, called for the reinstatement of telemedicine medical abortion.

The current decision shows that sustained advocacy can lead to concrete change. At the same time, access remains limited, and many people still cannot benefit from telemedicine services unless they meet strict criteria.

From our perspective, this is an important step forward, but not the final one. Continued efforts are needed to ensure that all women have timely and equitable access to safe abortion care, regardless of where they live or their personal circumstances.
