The Government of the Republic of Moldova has approved the National Programme on Sexual and Reproductive Health for 2026–2030, a strategic document that sets priorities for improving access to sexual and reproductive health services and reducing existing inequalities across the population.

According to the programme, the initiative aims to improve the quality of services, expand equitable access to sexual and reproductive healthcare and strengthen public health interventions in this field over the next five years.

Recent data show that access to reproductive healthcare and modern contraception remains uneven. According to the 2024 Generations and Gender Survey (GGS), the demand for family planning satisfied through modern contraceptive methods reaches 56.9% among married or cohabiting women. The figure is higher in urban areas (61.2%) than in rural areas (53.4%), highlighting persistent disparities in access to services and information.

The programme establishes three major objectives. The first focuses on reducing inequalities in access to sexual and reproductive health services and improving service quality. The second aims to improve maternal health and reduce preventable maternal morbidity and mortality during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. The third objective seeks to improve newborn survival, health and development through quality neonatal care and equitable access to essential interventions.

The programme also recognizes that certain groups face additional barriers in accessing information and healthcare services. These include adolescents, persons with disabilities, people from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds and survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. The new programme foresees targeted measures to better respond to the needs of these populations.

The document was developed by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Institute of Mother and Child and the Nicolae Testemițanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy. It builds on international best practices, previous national programmes and recent evidence regarding the sexual and reproductive health needs of the population.

The approval of the National Programme on Sexual and Reproductive Health for 2026–2030 represents an important step towards strengthening reproductive healthcare services and supporting evidence-based public policies that respond to the needs of people across Moldova.
