Navigating Pregnancy in a War Zone: Maternity Hospital No. 5 in Odesa
Oleksandra and Oleksandr Chebotar were eagerly awaiting their daughter’s birth when an air raid alarm sounded in Odesa’s Maternity Hospital No. 5, prompting a swift move to an underground bomb shelter. Amid the ongoing war, the hospital has adapted to provide care under extreme conditions, with a 12% increase in birth complications.
Dr. Igor Shpak noted higher rates of Caesarean sections and premature births due to stress. The hospital’s reinforced air raid shelters now offer safe spaces for expectant mothers. The war has significantly strained Ukraine’s healthcare, with over 1,400 health institutions damaged.
UNFPA has provided crucial support, including UAH 2.8 million in assistance for medical supplies and transport incubators. The ongoing international aid is vital for maintaining essential maternal and newborn care in conflict zones.
Dr. Shpak emphasizes the need for global attention to ensure better conditions for mothers and babies in Ukraine.
