Meta Removes Abortion Advocates’ Accounts Without Warning

Abortion advocacy organizations are facing an alarming new challenge: social media censorship. Recently, Women Help Women, a non-profit dedicated to providing safe abortion information, discovered their Instagram account had been disabled without warning. The platform cited violations of community standards regarding “guns, drugs, and other restricted goods,” despite the organization only sharing educational abortion content and information aimed at reducing stigma. The account was eventually restored, but only after public pressure and national media coverage.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. The Stop Censoring Abortion campaign found that around a quarter of submissions reported entire accounts being disabled after sharing abortion information—primarily on Meta platforms. These sudden removals cut users off from their communities and audiences, preventing access to crucial reproductive health resources.

Meta claims accounts should only be disabled after repeated violations, but affected users report that their accounts were removed after a single post or without warning, contradicting the company’s own policies. This includes educational content shared by universities and advocacy organizations, which is sometimes misclassified as “severe violations,” equating safe abortion information with harmful or illegal content.

The implications are serious: silencing abortion advocates undermines public access to reproductive health information. As Meta’s platforms increasingly become a central space for advocacy and education, the need for transparent, fair, and consistent enforcement policies grows ever more urgent.

If you or your organization have experienced unjust censorship, share your story using #StopCensoringAbortion to raise awareness and support the fight against the silencing of vital health information.
