Informed Women – Healthy Communities: Promoting Reproductive Health Education on Both Banks of the Dniester River

01 March, 2025

Between August 30, 2024 and February 28, 2025, the Reproductive Health Training Center (CIDSR), in partnership with the Tiraspol Health Platform, implemented the project “Informed Women – Healthy Communities”, with the support of the European Union Program “Confidence Building Measures”.

The aim of the project was to increase the level of information and empowerment of women and young people from both banks of the Dniester River in the field of sexual and reproductive health (SRHR), promotion of modern methods of contraception and reproductive rights.

Activities carried out:

  • 4 regional trainings, organized in Tiraspol, Bender and Basarabeasca, with the participation of 137 women and young people, exceeding the initial objective of 105 trained people.
  • Creation and distribution of three educational materials:
    • Brochure “Contraception – Guide for women”;
    • Brochure “Medical abortion – Essential information”;
    • “Community Leaders’ Guide to Reproductive Health and Gender-Based Violence”.

They were distributed in 633 physical copies and are available on the www.reproducthealth.md platform.

  • Training of 17 community leaders (compared to 15 planned) during a dedicated training, held in Chisinau on February 6, 2025.
  • Organizing a project closing event on February 27, 2025, which brought together partners and community leaders.

Project impact:

  • Increasing access to essential information for women, especially those from vulnerable groups, and strengthening their capacity to make informed reproductive health decisions.
  • Reducing stigma around topics related to contraception and medical abortion.
  • Develop a local network of community leaders, ready to continuously support SRHR education in their communities.

Lessons learned:

Close collaboration with local partners, such as the NGO “Interaction” and the Phoenix – Basarabeasca Community Center, was essential for the involvement of women from vulnerable backgrounds. At the same time, the involvement of recognized experts (Dr. Rodica Comendant, Dr. Oxana Ceban) increased the acceptability of sensitive topics in the targeted communities.

The project strengthened Transnistrian cooperation relations and laid the foundations for future initiatives to promote reproductive health and gender equality.
