Compendium on Respectful Maternal and Newborn Care 7 August 2025 | Technical Document

13 August, 2025

The World Health Organization has released a new compendium on respectful maternal and newborn care, marking a decade since its 2014 statement on preventing disrespect and abuse during facility-based childbirth. This resource is designed to support global efforts to end mistreatment and promote respectful, high-quality care for mothers and newborns.

Despite significant progress in understanding and measuring respectful care, large-scale implementation remains limited. Emerging research highlights promising small-scale interventions, but more evidence is needed on the most effective strategies to ensure respectful care is consistently delivered.

The compendium consolidates key evidence, tools, and resources to help healthcare programme managers and practitioners implement respectful maternal and newborn care in diverse settings. It offers essential background on mistreatment and the principles of respectful care, integrating theory with practical guidance.

Healthcare providers, policymakers, and programme managers can use this comprehensive resource to strengthen care practices, inform training, and improve outcomes for mothers and newborns worldwide.
