An exciting development: results of a pilot study of medical abortion using telemedicine presented in Tiraspol, Transnistria, Moldova
We are pleased to report a significant important victory achieved in collaboration with our partners in Transnistria. On April 4, 2024, a dissemination meeting was held to present the results of a groundbreaking pilot study on the use of telemedicine for medical abortion services.
Dr. Rodica Commandant, representing RHTC, presented the results of the pilot study, which were truly impressive yet modestly acknowledged. The study involved 100 people living on the territory of the whole Transnistrian region, aged between 18 and 44 years old and representing different socio-economic strata of the population. The effectiveness and accessibility of the telemedicine method were striking, with convenience and confidentiality proving to be the main benefits. It is noteworthy that the majority of beneficiaries had higher education (72 people), which facilitated clear communication and easy understanding of the process.
In addition to presenting the results of the study, participants discussed the achievements in the field of quality abortion care, emphasizing the invaluable support of donors such as SAAF, which has enabled even remote regions such as Transnistria to access progressive medical services. The words of the Director of the Center for Reproductive Health and Family Planning in Tiraspol, Oksana Ceban, resonated with all participants, including representatives of the local Ministry of Health, Transnistrian health workers and facility directors.
Observing a marked shift in attitudes and views, the participating doctors embraced the idea of entrusting decision-making power to the women themselves. This newfound trust and understanding emphasized the belief in women’s autonomy and capacity.
We are very proud to note that the Republic of Moldova has become a beacon of progress in offering safe abortion services through the innovative use of telemedicine to provide quality medical abortion services.
