Albanian Youth Turning to Contraceptives and Abortion Pills Without Medical Guidance, Study Finds

13 November, 2025

A growing number of young people in Albania are choosing to manage their reproductive health without consulting medical professionals, according to a recent study by the Albanian Alliance Center for Population and Development.

The study reveals that many young Albanians are using contraceptive pills and abortion medication based on information found online or shared by friends, rather than seeking proper medical advice. This trend raises serious concerns about misinformation, self-medication, and the potential health risks that come with unverified sources.

Experts warn that social media and peer influence have become the main sources of reproductive health information, often replacing doctors and trained health providers. This shift not only increases the risk of complications but also undermines efforts to promote safe and informed reproductive choices.

Elona Gjebrea, from the Albanian Alliance Center for Population and Development, emphasized that expert voices must take the lead in shaping public discussions and policies around reproductive health.

“It is essential to prioritize accurate, expert-driven information when addressing reproductive health and new legislation,” she said. “Only then can we avoid the spread of misinformation and disinformation.”

The study also highlights the need for clear, accessible communication about new health laws. Experts recommend that legal and policy changes be explained in simple, inclusive language to help the public understand their rights and responsibilities — and to prevent conservative or misinformed groups from misinterpreting them.

This research underscores an urgent need for comprehensive sexual education and stronger collaboration between civil society, youth organizations, and healthcare professionals to ensure that young people across the region can make informed, safe decisions about their reproductive health.
