Medical University and Karolinska Institutet are developing 50 mg mifepristone, also known as the abortion pill,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.contraceptionjournal.org\/article\/S0010-7824(06)00354-4\/fulltext\">as a new\u00a0weekly oral contraceptive<\/a>.\r\n\r\nThis method\u00a0does not have the contraindications or\u00a0side effects that are associated with the estrogens and progestins in hormonal contraceptives such as weight gain, loss of libido,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/fullarticle\/2552796\">feelings of depression,<\/a>\u00a0increased\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1700732\">risk of breast cancer<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/343\/bmj.d6423\">thrombosis.<\/a>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17138902\/\">Animal studies<\/a> have shown that mifepristone can be used to prevent the development some forms of breast cancer.\r\n\r\nMifepristone is also an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochranelibrary.com\/cdsr\/doi\/10.1002\/14651858.CD001324.pub6\/full\">effective morning after pill<\/a>\u00a0that can used up to 120 hours after unprotected intercourse. Combining a weekly contraceptive and morning after pill, makes on demand use of just one pill possible.\r\n\r\nThe study already started in Modova last year and already included more than 550 participants.\r\n\r\nThe outcome so far is beyond expectations:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Of the 2000 cycles with unprotected intercourse, there was only 1 pregnancy (the participant was already pregnanct before she started), which already shows a very high efficacy (PI=0,6)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Only 7 women stopped preliminarily. (1,5%)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Only 4% of the participants reported minor side effects.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>89% of participants stopped menstruating as expected<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nIn November the application was submitted for approval of the METC (Medical EThical Committee) to do\u00a0the study in the Netherlands and we will probably start with enrollment in March 2025.\r\n\r\nWe are very grateful for the support of our funders and colleagues from LUMC,\u00a0Karolinksa Institutet and the CRO and hospitals in Moldova for making this research possible.\r\n\r\nAbortion in the Netherlands\r\n\r\nWomen on Waves clinic in Amsterdam supports undocumented people for free as the Dutch government does not finance abortion services for this group, who are most in need. So far, in 2024 we provided 248 abortion services of whom 141 were undocumented people; i.e. people without civil registration number or people without insurance.\r\n\r\nIn total 48 people completed a follow-up form and all were very satisfied with the service.\r\n\r\n<em>\"You are a god send. Thank you so much.\"<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>\"I just want to express my gratitude for your service to women and professionalism. Thank you.\"<\/em>\r\n\r\nTraining Family Doctors\r\n\r\nFinally family doctors can provide the abortion pills in the Netherlands from January 1, 2025 onwards! So we hope there will be less need for our clinic. We have already trained 200 family doctor. Prior to the training only 18% wanted to provide the abortion pill and afterwards 45%\u00a0.\r\n\r\nSupport of telemedical abortion service USA\r\n\r\nWomen on Waves supports the telemedical abortion service Aid Access. In 2024 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aidaccess.org\">Aid Access<\/a>\u00a0fascilated almost 120.000 abortion services in all US states, this is 40% more than in 2023.\r\n\r\nSince June 2023, Aid Access partners with USA abortion providers to serve all USA states with FDA approved tele-medical abortions. These USA abortion providers are registered in states that have adopted laws to protect them against legal action from the states where abortion has been banned, the so-called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/evidence.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/EVIDra2200280\">shield law states.<\/a>\r\n\r\nBetween 30 and 35% of the people could not pay $150 and received partial of fully donated services.\r\n\r\nSupreme Court and Amicus Brief\r\n\r\nIn March, the Supreme Court \u00a0heard arguments of anti-abortion doctors from Texas who tried to restrict access to mifepristone. Women who has used the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aidaccess.org\/\">Aid Access's telemedical abortion service<\/a>, filed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/23\/23-235\/299303\/20240130173443972_23-235%2023-236tsacWomenWhoHaveObtainedMedicationAbortionViaTelemedicine.pdf\">An Amicus Brief,<\/a> presenting women who used the\u00a0highlights the indispensable role of telemedical abortion services was submitted for the supreme court.\r\n\r\nOn June 13, 2024, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/23pdf\/23-235_n7ip.pdf\">US Supreme Court decided that mifepristone will remain available by mail<\/a>.\r\n\r\nThe court stated that the people who brought the case have no standing.\r\n\r\nAbortion robot campaing\r\n\r\nOn March 26th, 2024, Women on Waves together with Aid Access and Abortion Access Front, proteseted in front of the Supremen court and launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenonwaves.org\/en\/page\/7839\/abortion-roe-bots-to-dispense-abortion-pills-in-front-of-the-supreme\">Abortion Roe-bots<\/a> that dispensed abortion pills outside the Supreme Court in Washington.\r\n\r\nApproximately <a href=\"https:\/\/aidaccess.org\/en\/page\/5314004\/abortion-roe-bots-dispensed-abortion-pills-in-front-of-the-supreme\">45 media articles covered the campaign<\/a>.\r\n\r\nImpact of the outcome of Elections of November 5, 2024\r\n\r\nIn the 25 hours after the outcome of the elections, showing that Trump had won, Aid Access received 10.000 request for abortion pills.\u00a0This is more than 15 times more than the normal amount of requests.\r\n\r\nScientific Publications\r\n\r\nWomen on Waves worked together with several universities in the USA.\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>Abigail R A Aiken,\u00a0Elisa S Wells,\u00a0Rebecca Gomperts,\u00a0James G Scott, Provision of Medications for Self-Managed Abortion Before and After the Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization Decision, JAMA,\u00a02024 May 14;331(18):1558-1564.doi: 10.1001\/jama.2024.4266.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Aiken ARA, Starling JE, van Blitterswijk DC, Looijen C, van Vliet T, Essink DR, Gomperts R., Advance Provision of Mifepristone and Misoprostol via Online Telemedicine in the US.
