Religiously unaffiliated adults, people on the ideological left and women are more likely to support legal abortion.\n\n<img src=\"https:\/\/cidsr.md\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/41_of_women_live_in_countries_with_restrictive_abortion_laws_which_translates_into_700_million_women_of_reproductive_age_deprived_of_their_bodily_autonomy._instagram_post_square_website_1-1024x538.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7478\" width=\"900\" height=\"473\" \/>\n\n<strong>How we did this<\/strong>\n<div class=\"wp-block-prc-block-collapsible__content\">\n\nThis analysis focuses on public opinion of abortion in 24 countries in North America, Europe, the Middle East, the Asia-Pacific, sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America.\n\nFor non-U.S. data, this report draws on nationally representative surveys of 27,285 adults conducted from Feb. 20 to May 22, 2023. All surveys were conducted over the phone with adults in Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Surveys were conducted face-to-face in Hungary, Poland, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. In Australia, we used a mixed-mode probability-based online panel.\n\nIn the United States, data on views of abortion comes from a survey of 5,079 U.S. adults conducted from March 27 to April 2, 2023. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/our-methods\/u-s-surveys\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">ATP\u2019s methodology<\/a>.\n\nHere are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.20_abortion_topline.pdf\">the questions used for the analysis<\/a>, along with responses, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/methods\/interactives\/international-methodology\/all-survey\/all-country\/all-year\/\">survey methodology<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2023\/06\/20\/support-for-legal-abortion-is-widespread-in-many-countries-especially-in-europe\/sr_2023-06-20_abortion_1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cidsr.md\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.20_abortion_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7482\" width=\"435\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a>\n\nA median of 71% of adults across the 24 countries surveyed believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while a median of 27% believe it should be illegal.\n\nIn the United States, where a <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/06\/24\/1102305878\/supreme-court-abortion-roe-v-wade-decision-overturn\">Supreme Court decision<\/a><\/span> ended the constitutional right to abortion last year, 62% of adults say abortion should be legal in all or most cases. <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2023\/04\/26\/nearly-a-year-after-roes-demise-americans-views-of-abortion-access-increasingly-vary-by-where-they-live\/\">U.S. support for legal abortion<\/a><\/span> has not changed in recent years.\n\nIn Europe, there is widespread agreement that abortion should be legal. In nearly every European country surveyed, at least 75% of adults hold this view, including roughly 25% or more who say it should be legal in <em>all<\/em> cases. Swedes are especially supportive: 95% say it should be legal in all or most cases, including 66% who say it should be legal in <em>all<\/em> cases.\n\nPoland stands out among the European countries surveyed for its residents\u2019 more restrictive views, at least compared with the views of other Europeans. Over half of Poles (56%) say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while 36% say it should be illegal in all or most cases.\n\nAttitudes about legal abortion vary in the Asia-Pacific region. Majorities say it should be legal in all or most cases in Australia, India, Japan and South Korea. But in Indonesia, 83% of adults say it should be illegal in all or most cases.\n\nIn Israel, 51% of adults say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while 42% say it should be illegal in all or most cases.\n\nIn all three African countries surveyed \u2013 Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa \u2013 majorities say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases, including 89% of adults in Kenya and 92% in Nigeria.\n\nIn South America, views about legal abortion are divided in Argentina and Mexico. But in Brazil, seven-in-ten adults say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases.\n\nAbortion rules are more restrictive in countries where support for legal abortion tends to be lower. Abortions in Brazil, Indonesia and Nigeria are only permitted when a woman\u2019s life is at risk, <span><a href=\"https:\/\/reproductiverights.org\/maps\/worlds-abortion-laws\/\">according to the Center for Reproductive Rights<\/a><\/span>. In Israel, Kenya and Poland, abortion is permitted to preserve a woman\u2019s health. Most other countries surveyed have more permissive regulations that allow abortions up to a specific point during the pregnancy.\n\nCompared with previous Pew Research Center surveys in <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/religion\/2018\/10\/29\/eastern-and-western-europeans-differ-on-importance-of-religion-views-of-minorities-and-key-social-issues\/\">Europe<\/a><\/span>, <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/religion\/2022\/03\/02\/son-preference-and-abortion\/\">India<\/a><\/span> and <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/religion\/2014\/11\/13\/religion-in-latin-america\/\">Latin America<\/a><\/span>, more people now say that abortion should be legal in all or most cases in many countries.\n\n<strong>Importance of religion and attitudes toward abortion<\/strong>\n\nAttitudes toward abortion are strongly tied to how important people say religion is in their lives. In countries where a greater share of people say religion is at least somewhat important to them, much smaller shares think abortion should be legal.\n\nFor example, 99% of Nigerians say religion is important in their lives and only 8% say abortion should be legal in all or most cases. On the opposite end of the spectrum, 20% of Swedes see religion as important and 95% support legal abortion. People in India are outliers: 94% of Indians view religion as important, but 59% also favor legal abortion.\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2023\/06\/20\/support-for-legal-abortion-is-widespread-in-many-countries-especially-in-europe\/sr_2023-06-20_abortion_2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cidsr.md\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.20_abortion_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7481\" width=\"640\" height=\"599\" \/><\/a>\n\n<\/div>\n<strong>How religious affiliation, country GDP relate to abortion views<\/strong>\n\nEconomic development plays a role in this relationship, too. In <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/global\/2020\/07\/20\/the-global-god-divide\/\">countries with lower gross domestic product per capita<\/a><\/span>, people tend to be more religious and have more restrictive attitudes about abortion.\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2023\/06\/20\/support-for-legal-abortion-is-widespread-in-many-countries-especially-in-europe\/sr_2023-06-20_abortion_3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cidsr.md\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.20_abortion_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7479\" width=\"622\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a>\n\nBut the U.S. stands apart in this regard: Among the high-income countries surveyed, Americans have the highest per capita GDP but are among the <em>most <\/em>likely to say religion is important to them. They are also among the <em>least <\/em>likely of the high-income countries to say abortion should be legal in all or most cases.\n\nReligious affiliation is also an important factor when considering views of abortion within individual countries. On balance, adults who are religiously unaffiliated \u2013 self-identifying as atheist, agnostic or \u201cnothing in particular\u201d \u2013 are more likely to say abortion should be legal in all or most cases than those who identify with a religion.\n\nThis difference is largest in the U.S., where 84% of religiously unaffiliated adults say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, compared with 52% of religiously affiliated Americans. Of course, differences also exist <em>among<\/em> religiously affiliated Americans, too: White evangelical Protestants are the least likely to favor legal abortion.\n\nIn countries where there are two dominant religions and negligible shares of religiously unaffiliated adults, there are often divides between the dominant religions.\n\nTake Israel, for example, where 99% of adults affiliate with some religion. In Israel, 56% of Jewish adults say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, compared with 23% of Muslims. And 89% of Jews who describe themselves as Hiloni (\u201csecular\u201d) favor legal abortion, while only 12% of Haredi (\u201cultra-orthodox\u201d) or Dati (\u201creligious\u201d) Jews agree. Masorti (\u201ctraditional\u201d) Jews fall in between, with 58% favoring legal abortion.\n\nViews differ by religion in Nigeria, too, even as the vast majority of Nigerians oppose legal abortion. One-in-ten Nigerian Christians support legal abortion in all or most cases, compared with just 3% of Nigerian Muslims.\n\n<strong>Differences in views by political ideology<\/strong>\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2023\/06\/20\/support-for-legal-abortion-is-widespread-in-many-countries-especially-in-europe\/sr_2023-06-20_abortion_4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cidsr.md\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/sr_2023.06.20_abortion_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7480\" width=\"627\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a>\n\nIn 15 of the 18 countries where Pew Research Center measures political ideology on a left-right scale, those on the left are more likely than those on the right to say abortion should be legal in all or most cases.\n\nAgain, Americans are the most divided in their views: 91% of liberals support legal abortion, compared with 29% of conservatives.\n\n<strong>Opinions by gender<\/strong>\n\nGender also plays a role in views of abortion, though these differences are not as large or widespread as ideological and religious differences.\n\nIn seven countries surveyed this year \u2013 Australia, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Sweden, the UK and the U.S. \u2013 women are significantly more likely than men to say abortion should be legal in all or most cases.\n\nIn an additional six countries in Europe and North America, women are more likely than men to say abortion should be legal in <em>all<\/em> cases.
