On Tuesday, 21 October 2025<\/strong>, a protest took place in front of the Saeima<\/strong> (Latvian Parliament) against proposed amendments to the Law on Sexual and Reproductive Health<\/strong>, which seek to impose new restrictions on abortion.<\/p>\n

The demonstration brought together around 250 people<\/strong>, most of them young, carrying posters calling on lawmakers to reject the amendments. Protesters chanted slogans defending women\u2019s right to make decisions about their own bodies and lives.<\/p>\n

They argued that the proposed changes contradict human rights principles<\/strong> and could endanger women\u2019s health<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The amendments were introduced by MPs J\u0101nis Grasbergs<\/strong> and Jur\u0123is Kloti\u0146\u0161<\/strong> (National Alliance), along with Ramona Petravi\u010da<\/strong> (Latvia First). The draft law would require women seeking abortion \u2014 and the fathers of the pregnancies \u2014 to attend mandatory counselling<\/strong>. It also introduces the term \u201cunborn life\u201d<\/strong>, defined as \u201chuman life that begins at the moment of fertilisation through the fusion of male and female gametes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health<\/strong> noted that Latvia\u2019s abortion rate is already among the lowest in the European Union<\/strong> \u2014 with 6.3 abortions per 1,000 women of reproductive age<\/strong> recorded last year.<\/p>\n

Several protesters expressed their frustration to Latvian media:<\/p>\n

\u201cOur politicians are trying to restrict abortion rights. It\u2019s a clear violation of human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s shocking and unacceptable how some politicians are infantilising both women and men about their ability to make decisions about their own bodies.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cConservative politicians are dragging us away from European values. Those who stand for democracy should speak up so that we don\u2019t end up like Hungary or Turkey.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to live in a Latvia where women\u2019s choices and destinies are limited.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Although the parliamentary commission<\/strong> did not support the specific proposals on Tuesday, the amendments will still move forward for a third reading<\/strong>, and discussions are expected to continue. The deadline for submitting proposals<\/strong> is 6 November<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
