Spain\u2019s left-wing government has announced plans to enshrine the right to abortion in the country\u2019s Constitution<\/strong>, reinforcing women\u2019s freedom and bodily autonomy at a time when conservative forces are attempting to undermine reproductive rights.<\/p>\n

The proposal, announced by Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez<\/strong> on October 3, 2025, aims to include the right to voluntary pregnancy termination (IVG) in Spain\u2019s Constitution \u2014 a step S\u00e1nchez called essential to \u201cguarantee the freedom and autonomy of women.\u201d<\/p>\n

The initiative comes in response to a controversial move by Madrid City Hall<\/strong>, governed by the conservative Popular Party (PP), which recently approved a far-right (Vox) proposal requiring medical services to inform women seeking abortions about an alleged \u201cpost-abortion syndrome.\u201d The concept, linked to depression, substance use, or even cancer, has no scientific recognition<\/strong>, and was later disavowed by Madrid\u2019s PP mayor, Jos\u00e9 Luis Mart\u00ednez-Almeida, who confirmed that such information would not be mandatory.<\/p>\n

Even so, the measure sparked intense political debate. S\u00e1nchez accused the PP of \u201cmerging with the far right<\/strong>\u201d and reaffirmed that his government \u201cwill not take a step back on women\u2019s rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Difficult Path to Reform<\/h3>\n

Abortion has been legal in Spain since 2010<\/strong>, allowing termination on demand up to the 14th week of pregnancy. Earlier laws dating back to 1985 permitted abortion only in cases of rape, fetal malformation, or serious health risks to the mother.<\/p>\n

However, to amend the Constitution, the proposal requires a three-fifths majority in Parliament<\/strong> \u2014 a challenging goal, given the PP\u2019s stated opposition. Despite this, S\u00e1nchez\u2019s government remains determined to pursue the reform, noting that the Constitutional Court already recognized abortion as a fundamental right of women<\/strong> in 2023.<\/p>\n

If the reform succeeds, Spain would become the second country in the world<\/strong>, after France in 2024, to constitutionally protect the right to abortion \u2014 a powerful message of progress for Europe and a reaffirmation that women\u2019s rights are human rights<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
