The Reproductive Health Training Center (RHTC) recently launched the first medical abortion via telemedicine service in Moldova. The goal of the project is to make medical abortion, a safe abortion method recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), more accessible for women and girls facing diverse access barriers, such as those living in rural areas. The Covid-19 pandemic has amplified existing barriers and created new barriers limiting abortion access. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u201cThe launch of this service is extremely timely. Access to abortion services has become extremely limited since the onset of the Covid-19 epidemic in Moldova. Many clinics have temporarily closed, women are unable to travel to regional gynecology departments with the suspension of interurban transportation, and the general message from public authorities is to stay home,\u201d remarked gynecologist\/obstetrician and RHTC director, Rodica Comendant. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The procedure for self-management of medical abortion implies the remote guidance of a trained medical provider through the following steps:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. The patient accesses the website specially created for this service (<\/span>avort.md\/prin_telemedicina<\/a><\/span>), determines the pregnancy term, and completes a short eligibility questionnaire. <\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Consultation from a trained gynecologist via telephone or videoconference. <\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Obtainment of abortion medications at a local pharmacy by presenting the electronic medical prescription written by the service provider. If the patient does not have access to a pharmacy, the medications will be sent via mail. During and after administering the medications, the patient can contact the provider regarding any questions that arise.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Follow-up will occur 1 week later via telephone or videoconference, in which the provider will assess the progression of the abortion and whether additional care is necessary.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Four weeks later the patient will take a pregnancy test to definitively evaluate abortion completeness. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Medical abortion via telemedicine was introduced in Moldova as part of the 2-year pilot project \u201cMedical abortion via telemedicine for women and adolescents in rural Moldova: breaking barriers with technology\u201d,<\/a> in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Social Protection\u2019s Department of Primary Care, the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy \u201cNicolae Testemi\u021banu,\u201d Nr.1 Municipal Hospital in Chisinau, Women\u2019s Health Center \u201cAna,\u201d and Gynuity Health Projects. sau prin intermediul unui apel video;<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span>Accesarea\u00a0 medicamentelor la o farmacie din localitate, pe baza prescrip\u021biei medicale expediate pacientei. \u00cen lipsa farmaciei \u00een localitate \u2013 medicamentele vor fi expediate prin po\u0219t\u0103 sau curier. \u00cen timpul administr\u0103rii medicamentelor, pacienta va putea oric\u00e2nd s\u0103 contacteze medicul pentru \u00eentreb\u0103ri;<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span>Evaluarea va avea loc 1-2 s\u0103pt\u0103m\u00e2ni mai t\u00e2rziu prin intermediul telefonului sau unui apel video, \u00een care medicul va constata dac\u0103 avortul e complet sau pacienta trebuie s\u0103 vin\u0103 la clinic\u0103.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span>Peste 4 s\u0103pt\u0103m\u00e2ni\u00a0 pacienta va repeta
